What are minerals? Do they form natrually or unnaturally?

Minerals are the basic components of all the rocks, sand and soil on Earth. They form naturally.

100

What are the three main types of rock?

Igneous rock, deimentary rock, metamorphic rock

100

How can you identiy igneous rock? and what is an example of igneous rock?

- The igneous rock is homogenous (you can not see layers)

- ex: Granite, pumis, obsidian

100

What does sustainability mean?

it means to use the smallest amount of a resource possible and cause minimal damage to the Earth
200

What are the 5 characteristics of minerals

Structure, Brightness, Inorganix, Colour, and Hardness

200

How are ingenous rocks made?

They are made when the mangma in the mantle cools and becomes solid.

200

How can you identiy sedimentary rock?

- they have layers and you can see the particles

- some can split along their layers

- absorb water

200

What does non-renewable mean?

That when we have used many of earths resrouces, they wont be replaced

300

How do we measure the hardness of a mineral?

Mohs hardness scale (1-10, 10 being the hardest)

300

How does sedimentary rock form?

It forms when small particles of rock (called sediment), is deposited in layers at different times. Overtime the layers are compressed and sedimentary rock forms.

It forms on the earths surface (on land or under water).

300
How do you identify metamorphic rock?

- have layers, but cannot clearlt see the minerals they are composed of

- they dont absorb water

300

How can we be more sustainable with fuel?

We can use less and energy and use more renewable sources of energy, like the sun, the wind, and more.

400

How do animals (including humans) get minerals

Animals cannot access minerals directly (like plants do through the soil and their roots), so they get minerals by eating other plants or other animals.
400

How does metamorphic rock form?

When rock from below the surface of the Earth is brought back under the surface, it experiences extreme heat and pressure. It becomes metamorphic rock.

400

What questions would geologists ask to identify minerals

- How hard is it?

- Does it reflect light?

- What colour is it?

- Does it leave a mark when you scratch it?

- Can you see through it?

400

Why is building materials and construction not sustainable?

Because construction uses materials such as different types of rock (Like cement is made of types of sedimentary rock), which are non-renewable materials.
500

What is the hardest mineral?

Diamond

500

What type of rock are fossils often found in? Why they type of rock?

Sedimentary rock, because  layers of sediment bury and preserve organisms

500

What are the type ways that igneous rocks can forms

Below ground (Intrustive) - magma cools slowly below earths surface

Above ground (extrusive) - magma erupts from a volcano

500

Why is food production non sustainable?

Extra credit: what is the water footprint?

Food production requires a lot of water

- growing grain and vegatables needs water

- producing meat, eggs, and dairy products also requires a lot fo water
