What category of force is this?

Classify ALL of the forces acting on the plane: (Hint there are two)

Strong winds push against the wings of an airplane while it’s flying. The wings bend slightly but do not break.

What is: The wind pushing against the plane is external force and the metal bending is internal force.

Avalyn uses a large pair of scissors to cut through a piece of cardboard.

What is: Shear: The blades push on opposite sides on the cardboard, causing the cardboard layers to split.

Categorize all of the forces acting in this situation:

A suspension bridge carries heavy traffic across a river. On a windy day, vehicles, gravity, and gusts of wind all act on the bridge at once. The bridge’s cables and beams stretch to hold the bridge up under all this force.

What is: windy, vehicles, gravity are external forces and the beams stretching are internal forces.

Name all 4 types of force acting in this situation:

Imagine a playground swing set on a windy day. The heavy metal frame pushes down on the ground. Malcolm and Vann swing back and forth, and the chains stretch as they swing. The swings and chains twist a little when the wind blows. The bolts holding the swings and frame bend slightly as the parts move in different directions.

  • Compression: At the bottom of the metal frame where it presses down on the ground.

  • Tension: In the chains holding the swings as they are stretched when kids swing.

  • Torsion: In the swings or chains as they twist slightly while moving.

  • Shear: In the bolts and joints where parts bend while the swings and the frame move in different directions.
