How did Jonas calm Gabriel when the new child squirmed fretfully? Explain how this might foreshadow events to come?
During the night, Jonas had to figure out a way to calm crying Gabriel. He began to rhythmically pat his back and hoped it would lull him to sleep. Jonas remembered a peaceful memory that the giver transmitted to him about a sailboat on a lake. He wasn’t aware of giving the memory until he realized that the memory became dimmer and was sliding through his hand into Gabriel. Foreshadowing, this means that if Gabriel doesn’t get released, he can possibly become the new receiver. He is able to see beyond because Jonas was able to transfer memories to his sister, dad, and Asher. Also, because he has pale eyes supported the fact that he can transfer memories to Gabriel.

Why was Jonas forced to change his plan?
Jonas is forced to change his plan because at dinner with his family, father tells Jonas that they will release Gabriel because he is too frantic at night. Now Jonas knows that “release” is plain murder. Jonas has grown attached to Gabriel and loves him. He doesn’t want Gabe to be killed. Now Jonas started his plan early and took Gabriel with him so he would be safe.

However, Jonas feels that perhaps he has gotten in over his head and fears that he will not be able to save himself and protect Gabriel. He is having second thoughts about his decision to leave, as it has brought him great suffering.
