Characters
He is a descendant of Girion, Lord of Dale; with his defeat of Smaug and the victory at the Battle of Five Armies, he was able to use his share of the treasure to restore Dale and Lake-town.
Who is Bard?
He came from the North to Erebor where he burned and sacked Dale before entering the Kingdom under the Mountain where he slaughtered or drove out the dwarves; ruled under the Mountain for over 150 years; enraged that the Company because Bilbo dared touch his treasure; he attacked and destroyed Lake-town where he was killed by Bard.
Who is Smaug?
One of the finest hobbit-holes in all of Hobbiton, this place symbolizes the comforts of home; Bilbo often dreams of this place: for example he dreams of eating breakfast there more than once.
What is Bag End?
He brings together all the members of the Company; he has Thror’s map and key; he acts as a guide and advisor; he slays the Great Goblin; he has the elven blade Glamdring (Foe-hammer; Beater).
Who is Gandalf?
He is a wizard; he carries a staff; he wears a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, immense black boots, and a silver scarf; he has a long white beard and bushy eyebrows; he is very wise, clever, and powerful. He has a sense of humor as well as a sense of adventure; he is fearless; he is a member of the White Council (a group of elves and wizards formed to fight the growing evil in the South).
Who is Gandalf?
He is the son of the wise raven Carc; he used to live above the guard-chamber of Erebor (the hill previously known as Ravenhill); he is 153 years old.
Who is Roäc?
Their names are Bert, Tom, and William; they are very large; they are made of “the stuff of mountains”; they turn to stone in the sunlight; they are not very clever, but are still very dangerous and quite evil.
Who are the trolls?
Evil does not enter the valley of this place; its location is referred to as the “Last Homely House”; it is where Elrond lives; it is a place of wisdom, learning, kindness, and it is a refuge for all elves and men of goodwill; Gandalf leads the Company here to consult with Elrond about Thror’s map.
What is Rivendell?
He is hired by Thorin as a burglar and is the 14th member of the Company; he finds and wins the Ring; he becomes an adventurer and hero, leading the Company out of danger; he has an elven blade he names Sting.
Who is Bilbo?
He wears a sky-blue hood with silver tassels, and a gold necklace; he is generous and courageous, but succumbs to greed, pride, and “dragon-sickness”; he is grumpy and short tempered, yet noble and loyal; He is serious-minded, and he loves giving long-winded speeches.
Who is Thorin?
He is the ruler of the wood-elves of Mirkwood (who are less wise and more suspicious than the High Elves of the West); he has a weakness for treasure and a desire to increase his hoard;
Who is the Wood Elf-King?
He is the elected ruler of Lake-town (Esgaroth); though he is selfish and cowardly, he also has a good head for business and rhetoric.

What is Mirkwood?
He is the son of Thrain, son of Thror, and the heir to the title "King under the Mountain"; he is the leader of the Company, but relies on Bilbo and Gandalf; he calls Dain to the Battle; he is consumed with desire for gold and wants the Arkenstone above all else; he has the elven blade Orcrist (Goblin-Cleaver; Biter).
Who is Thorin?
The Heart of the Mountain; a gem precious to the dwarves; “like a globe with a thousand facets; it shone like silver in the firelight, like water in the sun, like snow under the stars, like rain upon the Moon”
What is the Arkenstone?
He is Lord of Rivendell; he is the master of the Last Homely House; He is “noble and fair in face as an elf-lord, as strong as a warrior, as wise as a wizard, as venerable as a dwarf king, as kind as summer”; he knows all about runes of every kind, and he discovers the Moon Letters on Thor's map.
Who is Elrond?
He is a small, slimy creature; he is as dark as darkness except for two big, round, pale eyes; he eats fish and goblins (when he can); he lives on a slimy island in a subterranean lake down at the roots of the Misty Mountains.

What is Lake-town?
He acts as look-out; he had witnessed the Desolation of Smaug.
Who is Balin?
He is a huge, black-bearded man who is also a skin-changer; he takes on the form of a bear.
Who is Beorn?
He fell into an enchanted stream in Mirkwood and loved to sleep ever afterward; he was the look-out guard the night Bilbo brought the Arkenstone to Bard and the Elven-King.
Who is Bombur?
Evil wolves on the edge of the wild; they cannot climb trees, and they ally themselves with goblins to bring destruction to camps of men; seeking vengeance, they attack in the Battle of the Five Armies.
What are wargs?

What is the Lonely Mountain?
He often carried Bilbo on his back, and he helped Bilbo climb the tree in Mirkwood.

Interacted with the Company several times:
1) knocked three times to signal the beginning of the prophecy to open the secret entrance;
2) overheard Bilbo’s description of Smaug’s weakness;
3) brought news of the dwarves & Smaug’s weakness to Bard;
