The Mockingjay is a symbol of defiance against the Capitol. Initially created to spy on dissidents, the Mockingjays' purpose was discovered and then leveraged to deliberately mislead, confuse, and ridicule Capitol espionage agents.
Who is Caesar Flickerman?
He is a TV show host for the Hunger Games. He interviews Katniss and each of the other tributes before they are sent to the arena. Flickerman is a natural showman whose career has spanned over 40 years.
How does Katniss obtain her knife?
In the first few seconds of the Hunger Games, Katniss sprints toward a pack of supplies near the Cornucopia. She fights for it against another tribute, who is killed by the girl from District 2, who is skilled at throwing knives. The girl pursues Katniss as Katniss runs away with the pack, throwing the knife at her as she runs. The knife gets stuck in Katniss' pack.

Rue's death impacts Katniss in several ways. She begins to feel a new level of fury toward the games and the system that perpetuates them. She realizes that she has now killed another human being. And, perhaps for the first time, she believes that she has a viable chance of winning.
