Because it shall look as if the little prince was suffering and dying, so he doesn't want the pilot to see that. Also because the snake might bite the pilot too, since snakes are malicious creatures. But then he thought that snakes have no more poison for a second bite. So that he can go back to his planet and flower, his body is too heavy to carry with him.

They are little lights in the sky. For travelers, the stars are guides. For scholars, the stars are problems. For the businessman, they were wealth. In one of the stars the little prince will be living and laughing, so for the pilot it will be as if all the stars were laughing.
