What type of system is the Lymphatic system?

A circulatory system.

100

What are Lymph Nodes?

Small pinhead to a Lima bean in size, Lymph Nodes are responsible for filtering lymph.

100

What are lymph capillaries?

Small blind-ended tubes distributed in tissue spaces, microscopic in size, consisting of one cell layer sheet.

100

What is the Spleen responsible for?

Serving as a reservoir for blood that can be returned to the cardiovascular system when required.

100

How are the Lymphatic system and Immune system related?

Within the Immune system, the Lymphatic system produces/releases lymphocytes and other immune building cells that monitor and destroy foreign bodies.

200

Two main functions of the Lymphatic system?

Remove excess fluids from interstitial space and filter the body's fluids.

200

How does lymph flow through a Lymph Node?

Entry through lymphatic vessel -> percolates through sinuses -> new cells produce in germinal center -> lymph exits the Node through a single efferent vessel.

200

Lymph capillaries are 'poor fitting' resulting in ____ walls.

Porous

200

Where is the Spleen located?

Located high in the upper left quadrant of the abdomen lateral to the stomach

200

What organs in the Lymphatic system help provide defense to aid in the Immune system?

Lymph Nodes, Tonsils, Thymus, and Spleen.

300

What does the Lymphatic system contain?

Lymph fluid, lymphatic vessels, lymphatic organs including, spleen, tonsils, and thymus.

300

How does the Lymph Node filtering process work?

Debris are trapped by the web of reticular fibers then immune cells destroy and break apart debris by phagocytosis and other biological processes.

300

What is the Thymus?

A small lymphoid tissue organ located in the mediastinum, just below the trachea.
300

What are tonsils?

Masses of lymphoid tissue.

300

How does the lymphatic system work an immune response?

The lymphatic system produces and releases lymphocytes.

400

How does lymph form?

Blood plasma filters out of the capillaries into spaces between tissue cells, the liquid is called interstitial fluid or tissue fluid. The remaining interstitial fluid enters the lymphatic system before it returns to the blood.

400

What is the Rt Lymphatic Duct?

The Rt Lymphatic Duct is responsible for draining the right thorax, upper limbs, head and neck.

400

When is the Thymus at its largest state?

The Thymus reaches its maximum size at puberty (30-45grams) then is gradually replaced by fat and connective tissue

400

Where are the Tonsils located?

Located in a protective ring under the mucous membranes in the mouth and back of the throat.

400

What are the 3 lines of defense?

1st Skin

2nd Inflammatory response

3rd Immune response

500

How does lymph flow?

The lymph enters a network of small blind-ended tubes distributed in tissues spaces. These vessels are called lymphatic capillaries and allow excess tissue fluid to leave the tissue spaces.

500

What is the Thoracic Duct?

The Thoracic Duct is responsible for draining all lymph from the lower portion of the body.

500

What is the Spleen?

The largest lymphoid organ in the body.

500

What are tonsils responsible for?

Protecting against bacteria that may invade tissues in the area around the opening between nasal and oral cavities. They also serve as the first line of defense from the exterior and are subject to chronic infection.

500
What are the two types of specific immunity?

Natural immunity

Artificial immunity
