Why couldn't Mark communicate with NASA, and what did Mark do to fix that issue?
The antenna that happened to be responsible for Mark being on Mars still just so happened to be the communication array, so no antenna, no talkie from Earth to Mars.
He maxed out the Mars rover with 2 batteries, food, entertainment, and some sweet, sweet radiation from the RTG for heat, along with some insulation to keep the heat in, and went on an extended trip to get Pathfinder, but that was brok so he scraped a probe and Sojiner, and once tweaked a little, could communicate with Earth.

How did Mark almost die while making water?

He assumed that the flame would consume all the hydrogen, but it didn't. The hydrogen concentration in the Hab's atmosphere gradually built up to a dangerous level of around 64%
When he realized the danger, he decided to perform a controlled burn by first removing most of the oxygen from the Hab's air and then introducing oxygen in small, metered amounts using a separate tank. However, he was wearing an oxygen mask, but it wasn't perfectly airtight. His exhaled breath, which still contained some oxygen, slowly leaked out and accumulated over time.
This accumulation of oxygen created a small spark from the machinery or the existing flame, then ignited the mixture, causing a minor explosion.
How is marks thinking different now from before?
He started hopeless and not still like doing normal things, but now he's more resourceful and optimistic, while he'll do what he needs, no matter what.

The use of only airlock 1 repeatedly stretched out and unstretched that area until it couldn't handle it anymore, and it basically exploded.
JPL suggested that Mark switch between airlock 2 & 3 for all EVAs from then on.
