What are the elements of warm up?
Greetings, last class, hook.
What's labeling?
Giving grammar points a name to make it easier for students to understand and remember.
What's the cycle of a SCAPA class?
10 minutes warm up
20 minutes grammar school
25 minutes practice
5 minutes wrap up
Explain "variety" in practice.
Providing different kinds of exercises, book, workbook, games, speaking, etc, so classes don't become dull, repetitive, or boring for students.
What's student interaction?
Having students talk to each other, to practice with different vocabulary and structures.
What's the use of warm up?
To get students thinking in English and ready for the class.
What's for example?
Using positive-negative-question sentences for students to actually understand the topic.
What happens to the cycle when students are late?
We adapt it and compensate, so we always have controlled practice 50% of the time, and the other 50%, free practice.
Should we be strict with grammar and vocabulary during practice?
Yes, but not as much as during grammar school. Allow students to experiment with a little bit more freedom, and correct the mistakes in the end.
Can teachers use 1-word correction?
Definitely no, correction must include full sentences, as well as all questions and comments.
Can teachers ask open questions during warm up?
Yes, but only as a follow up, and after having asked several yes/no questions before.
What's the use of "repeat"?
To have students hear the correct form of the sentence and repeat it for them to assimilate and practice, correcting any structure or pronunciation mistakes.
What do we do if by the 30-minute mark we haven't finished the unit topics?
We stop, go with practice, and leave the rest of the topics for the following class.
What are the 5 vocabulary section categories?
Labeling
Pronunciation
Expressions
Numbers
Images
What's seamlessness?
When we make the class flow naturally, and make transitions invisible.
Can teachers correct if a student says "Yes, Mexico is bigger tha Russia" during warm up?
No, because the sentence is grammatically correct, and the focus of warm up is accuracy, not general knowledge.
What does it mean to be a facilitator?
SCAPA teachers are friendly, they become students' allies and guides, and provide students help, reassurance, and motivation.
What's the use of wrap-up?
To give students a sense of conclusion, go over the labeling as a last confirmation, and have them relax after practice.
What are the 2 most important things students develop during practice?
Fluency and confidence. Of course, vocabulary and grammar are important, but we should help students feel confident so they can improve in all other areas.
Explain what "SHOW, DON'T TELL" means.
It means explaining vocabulary with images or actions, not words. Also, explaining a grammar point with sentences (?, +, –) not boring grammar.
What are 2 ways to introduce the hook?
1 - Introducing new terms and when (if) students struggle, reassure them and tell them that you will be checking that topic in class.
2 - Introducing the vocabulary, maintaining the same grammar, or grammar seen before, to get students into the topic.
When is it necessary to make confirmation?
Every time you finish a topic. Elicit labeling to ensure understanding, and make sure all students participate (shuffling).
50% of the class controlled practice (warm up and grammar school)
50% free practice (practice and wrap up)
Which skills should we work on during practice?
Speaking mostly, but we shouldn't neglect listening, reading, and writing.
What is towering?
Using grammar and vocabulary wisely, going from simple to complex, and keeping in mind what studetns already know.
