When did man first land on the moon?
July 20th, 1969

What do the words "lunar" and "eclipse" mean? What do the words "solar" and "eclipse" mean?
"moon" "block (obscure)" "sun" "block (obscure)"
100
What is a fully shaded moon called?
New Moon
100
define "tide"
The regular rise and fall of sea level
100
Name three surface features on the moon.
Maria, Highlands, Craters
200
What is the name of the shuttle that first landed on the moon?
Apollo 11
200
What is a solar eclipse? How does it occur?
A solar eclipse is when the moon blocks the sun. This happens since the moon revolves around earth and falls between the earth and sun.
200
What phase has light growing from the left and is less than halfway across the moon?
waning crescent
200
What is a low tide? High tide?
High tide= high points of bulges Low tide= low points between bulges
200
What are highlands?
Light patches-hily areas on the moon
300
Name the three astronauts to first land on the moon.
Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins
300
What is a lunar eclipse? How does it happen?
A lunar eclipse is when the earth blocks the moon from getting sunlight. This happens since the moon revolves around earth and the earth falls between the sun and moon.
300
What two names are given to the phase that occurs when light grows across the moon from the left and stops halfway?
third quarter, last quarter
300
How can tides effect boaters?
During high tide a boat can anchor on land and still be floating in the water. When low tide comes, they boater may end up stranded on land.
300
What is Maria and how did it form?
Maria are smooth flat plains or dark areas that formed when lava flowed through cracks in the moon and filled craters.
400
When was Apollo 11 launched?
July 16, 1969
400
What color can the moon turn during a lunar eclipse?
coppery orange
400
How long is a moon day? Moon year?
Both are 27.3 days
400
What causes the bulges of water to form on either side of earth?
The moon's gravity pulls on earth, but it pulls harder on particles closer to the moon. The outsides of earth, where oceans are, are being pulled towards the moon, causing bulges.
400
What are craters? How and why do they form?
Craters are bowl-shaped depressions on moon's surface. They form from meteor impacts. The moon has no atmosphere so it is not protected from craters (millions of them).
500
What two things did the astronauts leave on the moon that are still there today?
American flag, boot prints
500
How are we (living on earth) able to see a full moon if at night, we are between the sun and moon?
The earth's orbit around the sun is tilted. The moon's orbit around the earth is also tilted, but at a slightly different angle than the earth's orbit. So the sun can cast light on the moon even if the earth is between the sun and moon.
500
Name all the moon phases in the order they occur.
new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, waning crescent
500
What two things cause tides?
thr gravitational attraction between the moon and earth, together with earth's motion in space
500
What does "maria" mean?
seas
