100
These types of joints include the elbow, knee and hip joints and are freely movable.
What are diarthrosis joints.
100
Injury to a muscle or tendon caused by overuse of overstretching. Acute versions require rest, possibly immobilization and cold packs for first 24 hours post injury.
What is a strain.
100
Recurring inflammation of the synovium of the joints.
What is rheumatoid arthritis.
100
Erythema migrans (bull's eye), headache, neck stiffness, fever, joint swelling and muscle pain.
What is lyme disease.
100
After this procedure, the remaining tissue is alternately placed in a extended position and up on pillows. Also prone position helps to prevent contraction of the hips. PT prevents contractures.
What is an amputation.
200
Sacs filled with fluid that facilitate joint movement by making it possible for muscles and tendons to move or glide over ligaments or bones.
What are bursae.
200
Bone and skin are broken, allowing bone to be susceptible to a greater chance of infection (osteomyelitis).
What is a compound, or "open" fracture.
200
Bone abcess is a potential complication and usually requires an incision. Caused by open fracture or spread of infection from another part of body. Treatment includes absolute rest of the extremity, aggressive antibiotic therapy, analgesics and high calorie high protein diet.
What is osteomyelitis.
200
Measurement of BMD with DEXA scan determines if a client can be diagnosed with this degenerative disease.
What is osteoporosis.
200
This sensation of pain, soreness, tingling, burning and stiffness after an amputation which decreases as inflammation subsides at the incisional site.
What is phantom limb pain.
300
These types of joints include the vertebrae and pelvic bones and are slightly movable.
What are amphiarthrosis joints.
300
Injury to ligaments. Immediate treatment is RICE.
What is a sprain.
300
Corticosteroids may be injected to reduce inflammation, which is characteristic of this disorder -- affecting the sac filled with synovial fluid that facilitates joint movement.
What is bursitis.
300
Total hip or total knee replacement procedures may be recommended for clients with severe forms of this disease. Other treatments include NSAIDS and steroids.
What is Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease).
300
Symptoms include crepitus and clicking and radiating pain in the face, neck or shoulders. Treatment can include moist heat, cold therapy, dental retainer or bite plate.
What is Temporomandibular joint disease (TMD).
400
These bind bone to bone.
What are ligaments.
400
May hinder blood supply, damage nerves, tear ligaments or rupture muscle attachments. Symptoms include pain, loss of function of a joint, change in length of limb and contour of joint. Traumatic version is orthopedic emergency.
What is a dislocation.
400
15% of those affected by this disorder -- caused most commonly by crushin injuries -- will have acute renal failure. Treatment includes IV fluids to maintain blood volume and renal perfusion, flushing myoglobin from kidneys.
What is rhabdomyolysis.
400
Physical activity, to prevent bone demineralization, is a good intervention to encourage when a client is diagnosed with this disease.
What is osteoporosis (again).
400
The median nerve of the wrist is compressed. Splints are used to rest the hands.
What is carpal tunnel syndrome.
500
These types of joints are immovable and include the joint between the temporal and occipital bones of the skull.
What are synarthrosis joints.
500
Usually occurs within 24 to 72 hours following fracture. Large areas of lung involvement produce severe pain, dyspnea, cyanosis, restlessness, and shock. Petechiae may appear over neck, upper arms, chest or abdomen. Treatment is bed rest, oxygen, IV fluids and respiratory support.
What is fat embolism syndrome.
500
If not treated, in 4-6 hours irreversible damage can occur to nerves and muscles and within 24 hours to 48 hours permanent loss of normal limb function can occur. Treatment includes relieving pressure and fasciotomy.
What is compartment syndrome.
500
Define arthroplasty.
What is the replacement of both articular surfaces within a joint capsule.
500
Disorder characterized by deposits of uric acid in connective tissue, joint spaces or both. Treatment includes NSAIDS, colchicine (acute) and allopurinol.
What is gout.
