What is Relevant?
This is the stage where a nurse has no experience and relies strictly on rules (Benner, 1984).
Who is the Novice?
Rogers (1969) defines this person not as a lecturer, but as one who provides resources and empathy to help others learn.
What is a Facilitator?
In this second stage, the nurse begins to recognize "meaningful aspects" of a real situation after having some prior experience (Benner, 1984).
Who is the Advanced Beginner.
This "condition" requires the teacher to be authentic and real, showing their true self to the student (Rogers, 1969).
What is Congruence (or Genuineness)?
At this stage, the nurse has been on the job 2-3 years and starts to see their actions in terms of long-range goals (Benner, 1984).
Who is the competent nurse?
While Benner (1984) maps the journey from rule-following to intuition, this core Rogers (1951) concept is the 'non-judgmental' environment a preceptor must provide for a Novice to safely become an Expert.
