The Gang
A dark-haired boy whose parents treat him badly. Before the story begins, he was beaten savagely by a group of Socs.
Who is Johnny?
These two characters die less than a year before the start of the book. Pony describes them as being kind and loving.
Ponyboy meets this girl at a drive-in movie and becomes her friend. She gives Pony a chance and doesn't judge him just because he's a Greaser. She enjoys watching sunsets.

The place where Pony first meets Cherry Valance.
This event occurs in Windrixville, and it causes the injury that kills Johnny. Dally says Pony and Johnny shouldn't have done this.

Who is Dally?
The main character of the story. He enjoys movies and books, watching sunsets, and hanging out with the gang. He is the youngest of the Curtis family.
Who is Ponyboy?
This Soc beat up Johnny before the story began, then is killed by Johnny while he's drowning Ponyboy. He dates Cherry Valance, who describes him as having something special about him. He wears several rings.
Who is Bob?
This is where Johnny and Pony got jumped by Socs, and where Johnny stabbed Bob.
What is the park?
Johnny dies right after this event. He says that violence is a waste.
What is the rumble?
This character cracks a lot of jokes, which is where he gets his nickname from. His prized possession is a stolen switchblade.
Who is Two-Bit?
The middle child in the Curtis family, this character is beloved by everyone for his glowing personality and handsomeness. Maximum rizz. Pony loves and trusts him more than anyone else in the world.
Who is Sodapop?
One of the gang of Socs that attack Pony and Johnny in the park. Bob was his best friend, and after Bob's death he decides to pull out of the conflict between Greasers and Socs. He speaks with Pony once at a gas station and once at Pony's house after the rumble.
Dally tells Johnny and Pony about an abandoned building of this kind where they can lay low and hide from the police.
This character volunteers to start the rumble. The Greasers end up winning the rumble thanks, in large part, to this character's strength.
Who is Darry?
Soda's best friend. He resents that Soda allows Ponyboy to hang around with them because he thinks of Pony as a little kid.

Not really part of Pony's gang, this character is a prominent greaser known for leading a much rougher, more violent and criminal gang. His group teams up with Pony's for the rumble.
Who is Tim Shepard?
Sodapop's horse. Soda loved him, and cried for days after he was sold.
Who is Mickey Mouse?
Cherry tells Ponyboy that the difference between Greasers and Socs is that Greasers show a lot of this, and Socs are numb to it.
