Who is the father of the Periodic Table?

Dmitri Mendeleev

100

What is the 1st group on the periodic table (not including hydrogen) called?

Alkali Metals

How many valence electrons do they have?

100

What group number is the oxygen family?

Group 16 or 6A

100

Why did Mendeleev develop the periodic table?

To group elements in terms of chemical properties

100

How does the size of an atom change as you move left to right across the periodic table?

How does size change when you move up and down on the periodic table?

Atomic number increases, the size of the atom increases because they have more protons and neutrons.

200

Most elements in the periodic table are classified as this

metals

200
Where on the periodic table can you find the Halogen group/family

The right side of the periodic table in group 17

200

As you move down a group of the periodic table elements have more __________.

protons

200

If an atom gains an electron what type of charge will it have?

-1 becomes negatively charged.

What happens if you lose electrons?

200

How does ionization energy change down a group and across a period?

decreases as you move down a group

increases as you move from left to right across a period

300

What are the horizontal rows called?

Periods

300

List two characteristics of metals

conductive of heat & electricity, ductile, malleable, high luster

300

What is group 18 or 8A called?

Noble gases

300

What is periodic law?

elements arranged by atomic number gives physical and chemical properties varying periodically

300

Why did Mendeleev leave "gaps" in his periodic table of elements

There were some elements that hadn't been discovered yet.

However, he was able to predict the properties these elements should have.

400

What are the vertical columns called?

Groups, Families

400

Group 13 or 3A

Bonus: draw an atomic model of Boron including the number of protons and electrons

400

Each element in a family or group have the same number of what?

Valence electrons

400

What is an ion?

a negatively or positively charged atom created by an atom losing or gaining an electron.

400

What element is located in period 5 group 18

Xe, Xenon

Now draw them as ions.

Which one is gaining and which one is losing electrons?

What is the charge on each ion?

500
What is an element that would have similar properties as Argon (Ar)?

Any of the noble gases

500

I am an element that has similar properties to Potassium (K) but am in the same period as Barium (Ba)

Cesium (Cs)

600

How are certain elements in a group similar in regards to physical and chemical properties?

They react with other elements in similar ways. They may share similar color, metallic character, etc.

600

Final Jeopardy

There are five unknown elements represented by the letters V, W, X, Y, and Z.  All five elements have the same number of valence electrons. Element Z is the lightest and the only non-metal of the bunch. Element V is the heaviest of the five and is a metal that can poison you (it was once used to make pipes).  Element X is neither a metal nor a non-metal, but is an important element in the production of your smartphone/tablet. Also, Element Y is neither a metal nor a non-metal and has valence electrons in the 4th energy level. Element Y loves yodeling, driving BMWs, and an occasional bratwurst covered in sauerkraut.  Lastly, element W is a metal used to make foil and a musical character that wants a heart.

Identify the group I am in and the elements for V, W, X, Y, and Z

Group 14 or what is Carbon Family
