Artisans were thought of as workmen, not as creators. They simply worked with their hands, producing buildings, statues, paintings, and decorations. Artists were considered creators. They were given great credit and respect for the imagination and intellect that went into the work they did with their hands.

What is humanism?
An intellectual movement beginning in Florence during the Renaissance. The humanist movement developed from the rediscovery of many Latin and Greek texts. Humanists believed that the liberal arts (art, music, grammar, rhetoric, oratory, history, poetry, using classical texts) should be practiced by all levels of richness. Humanists approved of self, human worth, and individual dignity.

What impact did the Medici family have on Florentine history and society?
The Medici were wealthy wool merchants and bankers. Through most of the 1400s, they were the most powerful family in Florence, in effect ruling the republic. They funded many architects, sculptors, and painters. Because they concentrated on the arts rather than on finance, Florence eventually lost its position of power among the Italian city-states.
