Can you explain exactly why this covenant is eternal?
The covenant is tied to the Land. The Land is a royal grant from God to Abraham and his descendants. This means the Land stays with them forever, even if there are descendants that disobey. Which we see here in the book of Deut. God tells them that he will punish them, send them out of the Land if they are disobedient. But if they change their hearts, God will return them because of the covenant he made with Abraham. So that makes the covenant eternal.
