The first king of Israel was Saul. He became king after the Israelites asked the prophet Samuel for a king to lead them, like the other nations had. Even though God wasn’t happy with the request (since He was their true King), He told Samuel to anoint Saul. Saul was chosen by God because he looked strong and impressive, and he came from the tribe of Benjamin. Samuel poured oil on Saul’s head to show that God had picked him, making Saul the first official king of Israel (1 Samuel 9–10).
