Explain why the Southwest region of the West is so dry.
It's called the Rain Shadow Effect. Here is how it works: Warm air evaporates and rises over the Pacific Ocean. It then cools down as it goes over the mountains. This causes condensation and precipitation. By the time it reaches the Southwest, the air has already gone over 2 mountain ranges and has lost most of its moisture. That is why the Southwest is so dry.
