A very wise mother hen once said, "Hey Walt, I bet you can't dig that rock out of the ground."

Who is Helen "The Hen" White (mom, mommy or momma also acceptable)

The Little Red Hen is an American fable first collected by Mary Mapes Dodge in St. Nicholas Magazine in 1874. The story is meant to teach children the importance of hard work and personal initiative.

BONUS:

WHITE FAMILY EDITION OF THE LITTLE RED HEN:

With four children and being the wife of a preacher, our little red hen, affectionately referred to as mom, mommy, or momma had a busy schedule. In managing her time, she came up with some very creative ways for us to occupy our time. In doing so, she could go about her daily chores of cleaning the hen house, doing laundry, shopping, cooking and so much more. Momma hen worked very hard, but she always made time for her two little pullets, Kim and Susan and two little cockerels, Walt and Tom. That was the best time of each day. One day, when momma hen was extra busy, she gave little Walt a shovel and said, "Hey Walt, I bet you can't dig that rock out of the ground." That might have been her best idea ever. Little Walt spent the entire '64-'65 school year of  kindergarten trying to dig up that giant rock. He took the task very seriously. Each day, after school, he would dig and dig and dig until he heard momma hen ring the dinner bell. This was his new routine, and he liked stepping into those oversized boots and moving dirt in hopes of digging up that rock. Not once did he think about what he would do with the rock once it was out of the ground. He didn't have time for that. So little Walt just kept digging and digging and digging. One day, momma hen got word from daddy rooster that the White family brood would be moving. This was sad news to little Walt. What about the rock? It was still in the ground. He would not be able to take it with him. But what he was able to take was even more important.  Those early years of working so hard taught little Walt a valuable lesson. A lesson he always remembered as he grew into rooster-hood, that hard work is... hard. Maybe Booker T. Washington, said it a little better when he once stated, "Nothing ever comes to one, that is worth having, except as a result of hard work." So, thank you momma Hen, for instilling in your little chickens, the importance of hard work!

ADDENDUM:

It should be noted, that as the years passed, little Walt, now rooster Walt, returned many times to visit the rock on Breckinridge Road. He would just stare at the rock and re-live the memories of spending time on that hillside in Summersville, WV. One summer, when rooster Walt drove up to visit the rock, it was gone. In it's place stood a brand new hen house. Rooster Walt drove away, convinced it either took heavy machinery or dynamite to remove that rock from the ground. Ironically, rocks have always been in rooster Walt's life. He has a rock collection. In high school, he was a Salem Rock. In college, he studied rocks.  His first teaching job included teaching students about rocks. But his favorite rock is from the hymn, My Hope is Built on Nothing Less, and includes the verse, "On Christ the solid Rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand."
