Parts of the Theater
The room(s) where the actors put their costumes and makeup on, and often sit while waiting for their scenes.
What is the dressing room?
What is a blackout?
Makeup used around the eyes, often to make them "pop" under stage lights (2 vocab words).
What are mascara and eyeliner?
The director's planned movement for the characters.
What is blocking?
A rehearsal with lights, sound, set, costumes, and makeup.
What is a dress rehearsal?
The location where the audience sits.
What is the house?
The person who creates and teaches the dances.
Who is the choreographer?
A change of costume that needs to happen very quickly, and typically takes place backstage close to the curtain.
What is a quick change?
Here at RMTK, the area between the stage and the audience around the sides and apron of the stage.
What is the moat?
The people who control the spotlights, to keep them pointed at a character or location.
Who are the spotlight operators (spot ops)?
A base layer of makeup applied on the face.
What is foundation?
Decisions that an actor makes about/as the character.
What are choices?
A rehearsal focused on preparing the stage manager, light board operator, and sound board operator for dress rehearsals and performances.
What is tech rehearsal or cue to cue?
The room where the stage manager, sound board operator, and light board operator do their jobs during a performance.
What is the tech booth?
The people who move the set pieces on and off stage, usually between scenes.
Who are the run crew?
A small fabric pocket that can contain a mic pack (radio microphone transmitter pack). The pocket is often made of a slightly elasticated material, and is attached to an elastic belt, or has a belt loop built in.
What is a mic pouch?
The time set aside before a performance for actors to practice any physical fight scenes, so that they can fight safely during the performance.
What is a fight call?
The white curtain or wall that covers the back and sometimes the sides of the stage. We have one here at RMTK! (Bonus 100 points if you can give its FULL name)
What is the cyc (cyclorama)?
The person who builds the set, sometimes particularly just the wooden parts of the set. (Bonus 100 points if you can name the person who does this for us at RMTK!)
Who is the carpenter? (AKA Doug)
Widely used for special make-up effects, such as wounds, or smoothing the seam between a bald cap and a forehead.
What is liquid latex?
Marking the script with notes on blocking and delivery; analyzing the script as an aid to character development.
What is scoring a role?
Sound that comes from within the story space, such as dialogue and live sound effects.
What is diegetic sound?
