Read the passage below.

No two snowflakes are exactly alike. Snowflakes form in clouds, and their different journeys to the ground affect their shape and size, giving each snowflake its own unique identity. Very cold clouds contain water droplets and ice crystals. As water droplets attach themselves to ice crystals, they freeze, creating an even larger ice crystal. When this happens, water molecules line up and form a six-sided shape called a “hexagon.” This is why all snowflakes are six-sided. The temperature of the cloud determines the shape of the ice crystal. The amount of moisture in the cloud determines the size of the ice crystal. Likewise, the more water there is in a cloud, the bigger the ice crystal will be. When several ice crystals join together, they form a snowflake. As snowflakes tumble through the air, whirling and spinning, they each take a different path to the ground. As each snowflake falls, it drifts through clouds with different temperatures and moisture levels, which uniquely shapes each snowflake.

The main idea is: Snowflakes form in clouds, and their different journeys to the ground affect their shape and size, giving each snowflake its own unique identity.

Give 2 supporting details.

2.The amount of moisture in the cloud determines the size of the ice crystal.

Water plays an important part in our lives and in our environment. It covers nearly three-quarters of the Earth’s surface. It is fun to play in, but it is also needed for life. In fact, we can not survive without water to drink. People also need water to wash, cook, and grow food. Every living thing needs water. Without it, plants and trees would not grow, aquatic life would have no where to live, and animals who find their food in the water would have nothing to eat. Up in Earth’s atmosphere, water vapor cools and collects into clouds. When enough clusters of cloud particles stick together, they tumble back down to Earth as rain, snow, hail, or sleet. Without water, the water cycle would not work, and we would not have precipitation on Earth. Did you know that most of the world’s population does not have access to clean water? We are very lucky to live in a country where clean water is available for us to drink. It is up to us to be responsible users of the water we have on Earth.

The main idea is: Water plays an important part in our lives and in our environment.

Give 2 supporting details.

Did you know that all reindeer do not just live at the North Pole? It’s true! Reindeer are interesting creatures. They can be found in Northern Asia, Europe, Siberia, Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. In North America, reindeer are called “caribou.” They are nomadic species, which means they are constantly moving from place to place in large herds containing thousands of reindeer. They survive the cold temperatures of their habitats because their coat has two layers. A soft wool under-layer lies against its skin. Long, hollow “guard hairs” form the top layer. These special layers help to keep them warm and dry. Just like Rudolph, a reindeer’s nose plays an important part in its survival. Since reindeer live in areas where food often hides under the snow, they rely on a keen sense of smell to find their dinner. Reindeer also have special hooves to scoop and dig through the snow to plants and food underneath. Male and female reindeer grow antlers. Each year the antlers fall off, and the next year, the reindeer grows even bigger antlers that they use to defend against predators.

There are many ways you can protect your teeth from cavities. When cavities form they give bacteria a place to hide while forming a clear coating on your teeth called, plaque. A buildup of plaque can burn holes in your teeth, so it is important to prevent the plaque from forming. Using fluoride toothpaste is a good way to prevent cavities. Fluoride is a chemical that hardens your tooth enamel and makes it harder for acids to burn through your teeth. Some water bottling companies add fluoride to their water, so drinking water with fluoride in it will also help. Another way you could prevent cavities is to avoid sugary foods, and chew sugar-free gum. Bacteria loves sugar, and when you eat lots of sugar they eat, too! There are many ways to prevent cavities, but the best way is to brush for two minutes, at least two times a day, using fluoride toothpaste and a toothbrush.
