What is the difference between a topic and theme?

A topic is one or two words; a theme is a complete message about life, people, or society.  I still want the same answer but I want the question to be posed lik

100

What is a character trait? Give an example.

A quality that describes a character's personality, such as brave, selfish, independent, or loyal.

100

In The Pedestrian, why does Leonard's ordinary choice to go for a walk become a conflict?

Because his society views his behavior as unusual and suspicious.

100

A student claims: “Leonard is different from the rest of society.”
Which evidence would BEST support this claim?

A. Leonard enjoys walking.
B. Leonard walks alone while everyone else stays inside watching television.
D. Leonard talks to the police car

B. Leonard walks alone while everyone else stays inside watching television.

100

Across the different Spider-Man movies, Peter Parker repeatedly chooses to help people even when he could walk away.

What character trait does this most strongly reveal?

Selfless, responsible, courageous, or compassionate.

200

A student says the theme of The Pedestrian is “technology is bad.” Explain what is wrong with this answer and turn it into a thematic statement.

Technology is only a topic. A thematic statement could be: When people become too dependent on technology, they may lose their connection to the world around them.

200

If a character repeatedly stands up for what they believe is right, what might this reveal about them?

They may be courageous, determined, independent, or principled.

200

Leonard Mead vs. the police car is what type of conflict?

Character vs. society.

200

Examination Day: A student claims: “Richard's society values obedience over individual choice.”
Which piece of evidence would BEST support this claim?

A. Richard is excited about taking the examination.
B. Richard's parents take him to the testing center even though they do not know exactly what will happen.
C. Richard likes television.

B. Richard's parents take him to the testing center even though they do not know exactly what will happen.

200

Peter Parker often struggles to balance being Spider-Man with having a normal life.

What type of conflict is this?

Character V. Self

300

Turn the topic conformity into a thematic statement.

People may give up their individuality when they feel pressured to conform to society.

300

Leonard Mead continues walking even though society thinks his behavior is strange. What does this reveal about his character?

He is independent and does not simply follow society's expectations.

300

In Examination Day, why does Richard's family have little control over what happens to him? and What kind of conflict is this?

The government controls the testing system and makes decisions about people's futures. Character v. Society

300

A student uses the evidence “What are you doing out?” to support the claim that Leonard is different from other people in his society.

What should the student explain about this evidence?

They should explain that Leonard is treated as unusual because he chooses to walk outside.

300

A student makes this claim:

“Spider-Man learns from his mistakes.”

Which would be the best evidence to support this claim?

A. Peter has superpowers.
B. Peter makes a mistake, experiences a serious consequence, and changes how he acts afterward.
C. Peter wears a mask.
D. Peter fights villains.

B. Peter makes a mistake, experiences a serious consequence, and changes how he acts afterward.

400

Which theme is stronger, and why?

A. Leonard should not have gone outside because judgment is always waiting to hurt people who are different.
B. When society pressures people to conform, individuals may lose their freedom and identity.

B is stronger because it communicates a larger idea about life or society rather than only describing what happens to one character.

400

Leonard is independent, but his independence causes him to come into conflict with society. What larger idea could Bradbury develop through Leonard's character?

Being willing to think and act independently can be difficult when society expects people to conform

400

How does the conflict in The Pedestrian help develop Bradbury's warning about technology?

Leonard's conflict shows that when society becomes overly dependent on technology, people who choose a different way of living may be treated as abnormal or dangerous.

400

A student claims: “Video games can teach players important problem-solving skills.”

They provide this evidence:

“My cousin plays video games every day and says they make him better at solving problems.”

Is this strong evidence? Why or why not?

It is weak evidence because it is based on one person's opinion and experience. Stronger evidence would come from research or multiple examples that directly support the claim

400

What is a theme about power that spans across all versions of Spiderman?

Power comes with the responsibility to use it to help others, even when doing so requires personal sacrifice.

500

What makes a theme universal, and why is universality important when identifying a theme?

A universal theme applies to people and situations beyond the specific story. It is important because a theme is a larger message about life, people, or society, not just what happens to one character.

500

A character wants to fit in with everyone else, so they hide their beliefs and change how they behave. Eventually, they realize they no longer feel like themselves. What theme could this character develop? Explain how the character's choices reveal the theme.

Trying too hard to fit in can cause people to lose their sense of identity. The character changes their behavior to gain acceptance but ultimately realizes they have sacrificed who they are.

500

Compare the conflicts in The Pedestrian and Examination Day. What larger idea do both stories suggest about individuals versus systems of control?

Both suggest that when societies give too much power to systems of control, individuals can lose their freedom and ability to make their own choices.

500

When using evidence in a written response, what should a student do after citing the evidence?

Explain how the evidence supports their claim and why it matters.

500

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter tries to fix a problem he helped create, but his choices lead to even bigger consequences. What lesson about choices does this storyline demonstrate?

Good intentions do not always lead to good outcomes, and our choices can have consequences we don't expect.
