The idea that you are more likely to be abused, neglected, or exploited. Children, the elderly, and people with disabilities often are susceptible to this. People are likely to experience this if they have communication difficulties, physical disabilities, poor social skills, if they depend on others for their needs, or if they have aggressive or self-abusive behaviors.

This is when two people argue and do not back down or make compromises, fighting to keep control. This type of conflict can lead to challenging behaviors. To avoid this, remember it's more important to be nice than to be right!

Community Options fill out this form to report anything out of the ordinary. Staff fill out a paper copy of this form thoroughly with all the information from the event. Staff are to inform their supervisor or the event and turn in the report following their shift. Our Quality Assurance department then enters the report into an electronic system that can be seen and followed-up with by members of the person's team.

What is communicating their wants/needs?

The type of support that takes action before a challenging behavior occurs. You avoid challenging behavior by supporting the customer by using praise, celebrating success, and helping them engage in activities they enjoy.
What are Proactive Supports?

Until the 1970's these were the only support options for people with disabilities. These environments consisted of people living in over crowded hospital-like long term care facilities that were generally under staffed and provided poor standard of care. The result for the people living in these conditions were lack of developmental opportunities, ongoing emotional and physical abuse, and sometimes death.
What is an institution?

Unless otherwise specified in a person's plan, this is the only time physical intervention is appropriate. This means that the person is in imminent harm or threat of harm to themselves, others, or if there is imminent major property damage.

These are incidents with our customers that we need to report to Protection & Advocacy. This includes any cases of possible abuse, neglect, or exploitation. It also includes any cases where medical treatment is provided beyond first aid (fractures, sutures, burns, serious injuries, suicide attempts, & any unplanned admissions into the hospital).
What is a serious event?

A support is provided to help a customer learn a new behavior. Example; Verbal praise is given to a customer for washing her hands, so she washes her hands more often.

A healthy and professional relationship between staff & customer which is focused on contributing to the sense of well-being. It is implemented through Positive Behavior Supports.
What is a Therapeutic Relationship?

This includes (but is not limited to) the following types of treatment of a person with DD or MI; name calling, belittling, teasing, yelling, putting the person at risk of physical harm or failing to get someone out of harms way, inappropriate touching, rape or sexual assault, corporal punishment, unauthorized physical force, bodily or chemical restraints used improperly.

In MTC, this stage is when you start seeing that there is a problem. You'll see signs from a person that include change in their expression, less eye contact, tense voice, possibly muttering. To support someone in this stage you want to assess stress triggers, lower or change expectations if someone is getting frustrated, provide redirection from the problem, and use creative talking.
What is tension stage?

This is the amount of time Community Options has to report serious events to Protection & Advocacy. Because of this time limit it is vital that you report things to your supervisor immediately after you are aware of a situation.

This includes (but is not limited to) the following types of treatment of a person with DD or MI; self-neglect, failing to provide minimal standard of care, not following the customer's plan, doing personal errands on customer's support times, not providing appropriate staffing/supervision, failing to provide proper basic or health needs, or failing to provide a safe environment.
What is neglect?

This is what you want to do when someone is in the physical distress stage of MTC. This includes making sure yourself and others are a safe distance from the person in distress. This also means insuring the safety of the person in distress.
What is protect?

This means that you are legally required to report any suspected instances of abuse, neglect, or exploitation. This applies to anyone who works in a professional care giving role.
What is mandatory reporter?

If the team feels a new behavior should be taught to replace a challenging behavior they put this type of plan into place. It is specific and needs to be followed consistently. It may include include planned ignoring, reinforcements, or physical intervention techniques to support behavior.
What is a behavior support plan?

The ability to stay in control of your own behavior despite what is going on around you. The key to this is a neutral presence and not taking it personally.

This includes (but is not limited to) the following types of treatment of a person with DD or MI; taking or misusing customer's property or resources, having a person do something for you without just compensation, volunteering at a position that would normally be paid, taking/using a person's property as a bribe, doing personal shopping/errands on customer's time, using a person for your own entertainment, breaching confidentiality, posting pictures of a customer on social media without written consent,
What is exploitation?

This is the goal in the recovery phase of MTC, when the person is calm. You comfort, reflect on what happened, and most importantly insuring the customer that you are still there to support them. Furthermore you need this for yourself as staff, which includes debriefing with your supervisor.
What is talk-out?

This is the first priority when something bad happens. The first step is insuring the safety of the customer. Then you inform your supervisor and fill out a report. It also includes steps taken to avoid this event from happening again. It often includes training for the staff or applying safety measures to manage possible continued risk.
