Unconscious psychological responses that protect people from feelings of anxiety, threats to self-esteem, and things that they don't want to think about or deal with. I’ve listed a few below for us to review.
What are defense mechanisms?
Justifying a mistake or problematic feeling with seemingly logical reasons or explanations.
What is Rationalization?
Behaving or expressing the opposite of one’s true feelings.
What is Reaction Formation?
These can serve a helpful role by protecting your conscious mind from stress and providing a healthy outlet.
Overachieving/overdoing in one area to compensate for failures/issues in another. For example, someone who feels insecure academically might compensate by excelling in athletics.
What is Compensation?
Blocking difficult thoughts from entering into consciousness, such as a trauma survivor shutting out a tragic experience.
What is Repression?
Channeling socially unacceptable urges into a productive outlet, such as work or a hobby.
What is Sublimation?
The third planet from the sun.
What is "Earth"?
Avoiding reality by using an activity or behavior as a way of distracting the mind. Examples include social media, substance use, TV, or playing games to avoid thinking about or facing something else, such as a relationship conflict or a stressful assignment deadline.
What is Fantasy/Escapism?
Reverting to the behavior or emotions of an earlier developmental stage.
What is Regression?
Focusing on the intellectual rather than emotional consequences of a situation.

Attributing one’s unacceptable feelings or desires to someone else.
What is Projection?
Becoming separated or removed from your experience. When dealing with something stressful.
What is Dissociation?
Separating components of one’s life into different categories to prevent conflicting emotions.
What is Compartmentalization?
One thing you can do for yourself after group.
What is "some form of self care".
Refusing to recognize or acknowledge real facts or experiences that would lead to anxiety/stress.
What is Denial?
Redirecting an emotional reaction from the rightful recipient to another person altogether.
What is Displacement?
These defense mechanisms might hold you back from facing reality and can act as a form of self-deception.
