The three types of potential energy are:
What are GRAVITIONAL, ELASTIC AND CHEMICAL potential energy?
100
Describe the energy conversion that takes place when you toss a ball in the air.
Potential energy (as you're holding the ball in your hand). Kinetic energy (when the ball is tossed upward). Potential gravitational energy (when the ball stops at the top before it falls) Kinetic energy (as the ball drops back to you hand).

A car traveling along the highway has _____________ energy because it's in motion.
What is KINETIC ENERGY.
100
What kind of objects transfer energy?
All moving objects transfer energy.
100
Waves that can transfer energy through matter and empty space. (Clue: Like the suns rays that travel through millions of miles of empty space yet we still feel the energy!)
What are electromagnetic waves (or radiant energy)?
200
Another name for Heat Energy is:
Radiant or Thermal Energy.
200
In order for potential energy to be converted to chemical energy this must occur.
Molecular bonds must be broken. (Ex. Wood has potential energy, but when it's burned the molecular bonds are broken in the burning process....this concerts potential energy to chemical energy.)
200
When you stretch a rubber band or squeeze a spring, this is an example of what kind of energy.
What is ELASTIC POTENTIAL ENERGY?
200
Describe the transfer of energy from when you throw a baseball until it hits the catcher's mitt.
1) You holding the ball -- it has potential energy. 2) The thrown ball has kinetic energy (it's moving). 3) The moving ball hits the catcher's mitt, transferring the kinetic energy to thermal energy (when you feel the burn!).
200
List as many kinds of electromagnetic waves that you can think of.
radio waves microwavess sun light x-rays infrared waves
300
The ability to cause change.
What is ENERGY?
300
When you eat your yummy spinach (like Popeye!), what kind of energy is involved?
Spinach has chemical potential energy. When you chew the spinach, you are breaking the molecular bonds giving you the energy. (Converting potential energy to chemical energy!)
300
When you hold a mug of hot chocolate in your hands, what kind of energy are you experiencing?
THERMAL ENERGY!
300
How does "work" involve the transfer of energy?
The definition of "work" is to PUSH or PULL an object to make it move. So when you lift a box from the floor, you're transferring the potential energy from the box, to kinetic energy once it's in motion.

If 2 people are biking down a hill (gliding, NO brakes), who's kinetic energy is greater (keep in mind both bikes are identical). EXPLAIN 1) The person who weighs 180 pounds has greater kinetic energy. 2) The person who weighs 110 pounds has greater kinetic energy.
The person who weighs more (180 pounds) has the greater kinetic energy. Kinetic energy depends on 2 things, an objects mass (or weight) and it's speed). Both bikers started downhill at the same time, so the heavier weight will generate more kinetic energy.
400
A moving object has this type of energy.
What is KINETIC ENERGY?
400
When you put gas in your car and start the engine...how is this an example of energy conversion?
Gas/fuel has potential energy; start the engine and this fuel is burned, releasing it's chemical energy (molecular bonds were broken), and this chemical energy converts to kinetic energy when the car moves. Potential energy converted to chemical energy to kinetic energy!
400
When you turn on a light bulb, what are the 2 kinds of energy that are being observed?
Light energy (also called radiant energy) and thermal energy.
400
Explain how a wave transfers energy.
A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy without transferring matter. (example: The surfer waiting for a wave; the surfer waits as a wave passes under him, lifting him up and then setting him back down in the the same spot --- the wave energy moved, but the matter [the surfer] stayed in the same place.)
400
This word is used to describe how units of energy are measured.
What is a joule?
500
This type of energy is "Stored Energy".
What is POTENTIAL ENERGY?
500
How is friction (thermal energy from the resistance of sliding objects) an example of converting kinetic energy to thermal energy?
Applying your bicycle brakes is a great example. The bike wheel is in motion (kinetic energy), you apply the brakes and the brake pads rub against the tire and this causes the brake pad and the tire to heat up. Kinetic energy converted to thermal energy!
500
The amount of kinetic energy an object has depends on what 2 things?
1) The object's mass (how heavy it is). 2) The objects speed (how fast it's moving).
500
How do sound waves transfer energy?
Sound is caused by the vibration of an object (example: when you hit the head of a drum, the surface vibrates back and forth, this movement disturbs the air particles and transfers kinetic energy to them. When this energy strikes your eardrum, you hear the sound).

Where is potential chemical energy stored? Give an example.
Potential chemical energy is stored in the bonds between atoms. Any time you eat food, the chewing and digesting of that food breaks the bonds, releasing the energy in your body.
