Why did the New England colonies form or why did the colonist settle there?

They were searching for religious freedom so they could practice their own religion. The two main groups of people who lived here were Puritans and Pilgrims. These two groups did not want anyone else but themselves.

Women who came from poorer homes needed to work just as hard as men in the fields and at home. They were really not educated. Both women were not allowed to vote.

The soil was rocky and harsh winters which made it difficult for farming. Because of the distance to the coast fishing and trading became important. Lots of trees and lumber allowed for shipbuilding to occur.

Because of harsh winters and rocky soil not many large farms were in these colonies. Instead used lumber to make ships. Also were close to ports to fish and trade with others.

How are indentured servants and slaves the same and different? 

Alike: Both worked on plantations that were owned by large landowners. Both were given shelter and food.

Different: Slaves did not have a choice they were forced to work. Indentured servants signed a contract and would be free after. The indentured servants had to work to pay off voyage.

The quality of the soil made it easy to farm. Short winters and long summers allowed for crops to grow. Most of the artisans lived here and were important to make wheat and grains.

Because of great soil and moderate climate made grains or wheat possible to grow. Will become the breadbasket of the thirteen colonies.

Alike: Both grew crops in the fields.

Different: Large landowners had workers who grew cash crops while farmers were family owned and grew crops for their own survival.

Not many people lived in these colonies. Mostly large plantations where workers would work to grow cash crops. The climate and soil allowed for cash crops to grow.

Because of the rich soil and mild climate cash crops were able to be grown. There were a lot of large farms that required lots of workers to keep them running. The cash crops grown were rice, indigo, tobacco, and cotton.

Boys: Worked with their dad in the farms or learned their trade.

Girls: Helped the mom doing house chores such as taking care of the younger siblings. Both received their education from their family mostly the wealthy were able to get educated.
