Tissue with a single layer of square cells
Simple Cuboidal
Makes up the outer layer of skin and covers the mouth and tongue.
Stratified squamous
Loose CT. Consists of collagen, elastic and reticular fibers and many different types of cells. One of the most widely distributed tissues.
Areolar
Forms tendons and ligaments, provides a strong attachment.
Dense Regular
Covers body surfaces, lines body cavities and hollow organs. Forms glands.
Epithelial Tissue
Many layers of scale shaped cells
Stratified Squamous
Functions in filtration, diffusion and osmosis, lines air sacs of lungs.
Simple Squamous
Dense CT. Consists mainly of collagen fibers arranged in neat bundles with fibroblasts in between.
Dense Regular
Provides insulation and stores fat.
Adipose
Protects/supports organs, binds organs together, stores energy in fat, provides immunity.
Connective Tissue
Two layers of tall cells
Stratified Columnar
Absorption and secretion, lines the kidney tubules
Simple Cuboidal
Dense CT. Made of elastic fibers and fibroblasts, allows organs to stretch and return to their original shape.
Elastic CT
Found in lung tissue and vocal cords, allows tissue to stretch
Elastic CT
Generates the physical force needed to make the body move.
Muscular Tissue
One layer of tall cells that looks like it has many layers
Pseudostratified Columnar
Secretion of mucus, lines trachea and upper respiratory tract.
Pseudostratified Columnar
Cartilage. Consists of thick bundles of collagen fibers with chondrocytes lined up in between
Fibrocartilage
Provides tensile strength in many directions, forms the dermis of skin and joint capsules.
Dense Irregular
Detects changes inside and outside of the body, sends nerve impulses that coordinate body activities.
Nervous Tissue
Tissue that has both cuboidal and columnar cells. It allows for stretch
Transitional
Protection, lines ducts of sweat glands and part of the urethra.
Stratified Cuboidal
Elastic fibers and chondrocytes. External ear.
Elastic Cartilage
Forms part of the basement membrane, forms stroma of organs, found around blood vessels and muscles. Functions in filtration.
Reticular CT
Avascular, has a nerve supply, high capacity for renewal by cell division (heals quickly)
Epithelial Tissue
