This is what Jem means when he says,"It's like bein' a caterpillar in a cocoon, that's what it is. Like somethin' asleep wrapped up in a warm place. I always thought Maycomb folks were the best folks in the world, least that's what they seemed like" (Lee 215).
What is Jem is upset by the small minded attitude of Maycomb's residents? He now understands how deep people's racism and prejudice are and that he will be dealing with these attitudes for as long as he lives in Maycomb.
