The TOEFL reading questions that are usually worth 2 pts are about identifying the main ideas from the reading. How do you tell the main ideas apart from the minor ideas? 

The main ideas have whole paragraphs dedicated to them, or are recurring (repeated) throughout the text, whereas minor ideas have only one or two sentences dedicated to them.
