What are the measures of center?

Mean, Median, Mode

100

What are the measures of variability (spread)?

Range, IQR, MAD

100

When the data distribution is skewed __________, the mean is greater than the median.

When the data distribution is skewed __________, the mean is less than the median.

right, left

100

Find the range: 3.4,  -9.1,  6,  2.4,  1.6,  -0.1

-15.1

100

What is this called? What is another word(s) for minimum and maximum?

Box Plot, Lower Extreme and Upper Extreme

100

What does Bimodal mean?

There are 2 modes in the data set.

200

A histogram shows a data set that is strongly skewed to the left. Which measure of center should be used?

Median because it is skewed left (outlier present)

200

A data set has the following values: 4,8,10,15,18,21,28. What is the interquartile range (IQR)?

IQR is 13

200

What is the shape of this data? Also, list descriptions of the graph.

Skewed left, more data is on the right side. We see outliers, there is a gap, there is a peak

200

Find the mean: 3.4,  -9.1,  6,  2.4,  1.6,  -0.1

Mean: 0.7

200

What is the Lower Extreme, Q1, Median, Q3, Upper Extreme of the box plot?

LE: 3.5

Q1: 5.5

Median: 6

Q3: 7

UE:7.5

200

What is an outlier? Which measures of center and spread is best used with outliers?

A number that "stands out" from the data. Extremely high or low in comparison to the bulk of the data.

Median and IQR

300

A data set showing monthly rainfall has a symmetric, bell-shaped distribution. Which measure of center is most appropriate?

Mean

300

A group of students scored the following points on a quiz: 7, 9, 10, 12, 15. Calculate the Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) to understand the average spread of scores from the class average.

AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

MAD: 2.32 or 2.3

300

What is the shape of A, B, and C dot plots? Also, what measure of center would you use to describe it?

Uniform (mean), symmetric (mean), and skewed left (median)

300

Find interquartile range of this data set:

3.4,  -9.1,  6,  2.4,  1.6,  -0.1

IQR: 3.5

300

What is the interquartile range? What percentage of the data falls within the Interquartile Range (IQR)?

IQR: 1.5, The IQR holds 50% of the data.

300

If the data is skewed right, is the mean or median greater?

The mean is higher because the skewed data is pulling it right (which is up the number line).

400

A basketball player scored the following points in seven games: 18,15,22,15,15,22,20,19,22. What is the mode of the data set? What word can we use to describe it?

22 and 15...Bimodal
400

In a data set with values 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, the mean is 14. If you calculate the absolute deviations from the mean, the absolute deviation of 6 from the mean is ____.

the mean is 8
400

What is the shape of this graph? Explain how you know. What measure of center should we use to best describe the data?

Bimodal (there are two peaks which indicate two modes) and mode

400

A teacher recorded the number of homework problems completed by students in one week: 15,18,20,22,25,28,30. Calculate the mean absolute deviation (MAD) for this data set. Show all your work.

MAD: 4.4

400

Is the box plot skewed left or skewed right? Why?

Skewed left because the tail is longer on the left. Also, most of the data is on the right.
400

If the data is skewed left, is the mean or median greater?

The median is greater because the mean is being pulled left (which is less...less is left)

500

Find the median 17.3, 20.8, 24.5, 32.8, 38.9, 42.5

Median: 28.65

500

A baker tracked the number of cupcakes sold each day for a week: 25, 30, 22, 35, 28, 32, 20. Find the MAD to understand the typical variation in daily sales.

MAD: 4.37 or 4.4

What does the MAD tell us about the Data?

500

What is the range of the stem and leaf plot? What is the shape of the graph?

Range: 20

Shape: Symmetric

500

A nutritionist is analyzing the calorie content of 6 different granola bars to see how consistent they are. The number of calories per bar are:
[61, 42, 52, 27, 35, 23]

MAD: 11.67 or 11.7

500
Which measures can we find using a box plot?

a) mean     b) median.   c) mode.

d)MAD.      e) IQR.        f) range

We can use the box plot to find range, IQR, and the median. It does not give us all of the exact numbers in the data, therefore we cannot find the mean, mode, or MAD.

500

Why do we use IQR and Median when outliers are present and not Mean and MAD?

IQR and Median are not as affected by outliers like the mean and MAD are. The mean and MAD use all numbers in the data set and the IQR and Median do not...which is why they are not affected by the outliers.
