The top number in a fraction.
What is a numerator?
List 3 equivalent fractions to 5/8.
10/16 15/24 20/32 25/40 etc.
Use a number line, butterfly method, common denominators, or area model to prove which fraction is bigger. 1/4 or 1/6
1/4 > 1/6 (check work for proof)
Paper Airplane
Flynn - 1/4 meter
Rick - 1/5 meter
Emmy - 4/20 meter
Reeva - 3/5 meter
Whose airplane flew the furthest?
Reeva's flew the furthest.
The bottom number in a fraction.
What is the denominator?
Maseda ate 1/4 of a pizza. What fraction is also equal to this amount.
a. 3/10
b. 24/100
c. 3/12
c. 3/12
Use a number line, butterfly method, common denominators, or benchmark fractions to prove which fraction is bigger. 2/5 or 5/10
2/5 < 5/10 (check students' work for proof)
Paper Airplane
Flynn - 1/4 meter
Rick - 1/5 meter
Emmy - 4/20 meter
Reeva - 3/5 meter
Whose airplane flew further Flynn or Rick? Explain or use pictures to prove it.
Flynn's airplane flew further than Rick's airplane.
(Show work)
A part of a whole.
What is a fraction?
Find an equivalent fraction that uses smaller numbers (using division facts) for 32/40.
16/20 or 8/10 or 4/5
Put these fractions in order using common denominator. 1/4, 3/16, 7/8
3/16 < 4/16 < 14/16, so...
3/16 < 1/4 < 7/8
Paper Airplane
Flynn - 1/4 meter
Rick - 1/5 meter
Emmy - 4/20 meter
Reeva - 3/5 meter
Rick says his airplane flew further than Emmy's? Is he correct? Explain.
No he is incorrect because they flew the same amount. 1/5 = 4/20 (show work or explaination or both)
A known fraction that is commonly used for estimating.
What is a Benchmark Fraction?
Find the two fractions that are equal.
1/10 3/5 1/5 7/12 6/10
3/5 = 6/10
What is the LCD for these fractions: 1/9 and 5/6
18 is the least common denominator
Ryland used benchmark fractions to measure some insects. He states that a ladybug is about 1/4 inch long and a cricket is 2/3 inch long. Which insect is longer?
The cricket, because 2/3 is closer to a whole and 1/4 is closer to zero.
A number that is a factor of two or more given numbers.
Draw a number line or area model to prove that 3/4 = 6/8
(Check student's work)
What is the LCD for these fractions: 10/12, 4/6, 2/3, and 7/12
12 is the least common denominator
Kari says that 3/4 of a pizza and 6/8 of a pizza are always the same. Eloise says while 3/4 and 6/8 are equal fractions, they could still represent different amounts. Who is correct? Explain using words, pictures, and/or numbers.
Eloise is correct because it all depends on the size of the pissas. If the pizza were the same size then it would be equal, however if they were different sizes then 3/4 of a large is not the same as 6/8 of a small.
