A cloud appeared, covered them, and God's voice from the cloud told them to listen to His Son. When the cloud disappeared, Elijah and Moses were gone.
What did Jesus tell the disciples about His fate?
That He will suffer by the hands of man.
Why is Elijah's presence at the Transfiguration important?
Because Jesus was the fulfillment of the prophetic messages for a Messiah.

Because his God-ordained calling as the physical deliverer for God's people pointed to the need for a spiritual deliverer found in Jesus.
