What does vascular mean?
Containing vessels
The human circulatory system pumps blood through three types of vessels. What are they?
Arteries, capillaries, and veins.
What are the three main parts of the respiratory system?
The lungs, a system of tubes that connect the lungs to the outside air, and the diaphragm
What is sap? What does it do?
What is the function of arteries and veins?
They deliver blood to all of the cells in your body
What happens when your diaphragm muscle contracts?
Air is pulled into your lungs and you inhale
Leaf veins have two tubes, or vessels. What are they?
Xylem and phloem
What is the function of veins?
They carry blood from the cells back to the right side of the heart
What happens when the diaphragm muscle relaxes?
Air flows out of your lungs and you exhale
What is the function of xylem vessels?
They transport water and minerals from the plant’s roots throughout the entire plant to all the cells
What is the function of the right side of the heart? Be specific. (What are the right chambers called? What happens here?)
The red blood cells flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle and is pumped to the lungs
In the lungs, the carbon dioxide is exhaled and fresh oxygen is inhaled and transported to the red blood cells
These are "tiny tubes" and "air sacs" in your lungs.
Bronchioles and Alveoli
What is the function of the phloem vessels?
They transport sap from the green photosynthetic cells to all the other cells in the plant
What is the function of the left side of the heart? Be specific. (What are the left chambers called? What happens here?)
The red blood cells carrying oxygen flow from the lungs into the left atrium
The red blood cells flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle and is pumped to all the cells in the body

When you inhale, the air ends up in the alveoli at the ends of the bronchioles. The alveoli are surrounded by capillaries. Red blood cells pick up the oxygen. At the same time, the red blood cells release waste carbon dioxide from the body cells into the alveoli. This waste gas goes into the air when you exhale (breathe out).
