Grounding techniques help gently bring a person back to the present moment, reminding them of their surroundings. There are several ways to do this. An individual might:

  • count things they can see, touch, hear, smell, or taste
  • drink some cool water or splash water on the face

Although you can’t guarantee your child will never use alcohol or other drugs, there are ways to reduce the possibility they will experience harms from their use.

It can help to:

  • Develop a close and trusting relationship with your child from an early age, and support and encourage positive behaviour.
  • Show appropriate behaviour yourself, such as drinking moderately and not using illicit drugs around them
  • Establish agreements and rules about what is acceptable behaviour around alcohol and drugs.
  • Encourage a healthy approach to life, including good foods, regular exercise and sports.
