What are the 6 nutrients we've learned about?
Protein, fat, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, and water.
Give a couple of examples of a good source of protein.
Chicken, beef, fish, eggs, beans, and dairy.
What is a stimulus? Give an example.
A stimulus is a thing or event that can be internal(Inside) or external (Outside). Stimuli can be sensed with one of our five senses.
Example: A loud noise outside (external). Hot sunny day (external). Feeling hungry or dehydrated (internal).
How many parents are involved in asexual reproduction and how many parents are involved for sexual reproduction?
Asexual = 1 parent
Sexual = 2 parents
What are organelles?
True or False: There exist good fats in foods and bad fats in food.
True. Avocado's have good fats we want our bodies to consume and foods with high saturated/trans fats such as fried food have bad fats that cause health problems.
What is the difference between carbohydrates and fats?
Carbohydrates supply energy to our bodies immediately, fats are used to store energy for later.
If any of the 4 lobes in your brain are damage, will it have an impact on how you interact with the world? Why or Why not?
Yes. For example, if you damage your occipital lobe, your vision can be impaired or if you damage your frontal lobe, you personality can even change!
True or False: Genes make up chromosomes and chromosomes are found in the nucleus.
True.
What is the function of the nucleus in an organelle?
The nucleus stores DNA in Eukaryotes and it is the control center of the cell.
What is known as the scientific measurement of food?
Calories!
If you eat too many bad fats (trans/saturated fats) and unhealthy foods, what health problems may a person get?
Diabetes, heart disease, obesity, stroke, etc.
What are the 3 main parts of the brain and what do those parts do?
The the cerebrum (Controls your thoughts, emotions, and memory, information processing), the cerebellum (Controls your motor functions such as your movement, balance, and coordination), and the brain stem (Connects your brain to your spinal cord (which is connected to the rest of your bodies nerves).
Give a genotype for each: Homozygous recessive, Homozygous Dominant, and Heterozygous.
HR: bb (the same recessive alleles)
HD: BB (the same dominant alleles)
H: Bb (different alleles)
True or False: Chloroplasts are found in animal cells.
False. They are only found in plant cells and are used to make energy for the plant through photosynthesis.
Jasmine is 12 years old and needs to eat 1,500 calories a day to get enough energy. She's been eating 386 calories more than needed, but then she burns 1,900 calories. Is she losing or gaining weight based of her calorie intake?
Jasmine is losing weight. She is eating 386 more calories than necessary, bringing her calorie count to 1,886, but then she burns 1,900, leaving her with -14 calories. That means her body is taking from her stored fat for energy.
What is the difference between the serving size and servings per container?
Serving size tells you how much of the food/nutrients is in one portion. Servings per container tells you how many of those portions are in the whole package. For example, if a bag of chips has a serving size of 10 chips and the one serving contains 5 grams of fat and the bag has 5 servings per container, that means there are about 50 chips in the bag and in total those 50 chips have 25 grams of fat. It helps you know how much you're eating.
True or False: Our brains react to both internal and external stimuli.
True!
Life began with what type of organism?
A single celled organism known as a prokaryote. A bacteria!
What is the difference between a cytoplasm and cell membrane?
The cell membrane is the wall of the cell or security guard that let's materials in and out of the cell. The cytoplasm is the cell floor and holds the organelles together with a gel like substance.
