Russian. During the Russian revolution, there was a pacifist Christian sect called the Doukhobors who refused to take up arms to support the Tsar. Rather than facing the threat of being killed for not supporting the Tsar, the writer Tolstoy donated the profits of two of his books to enable the Doukhobor community to move to Canada, where they sought religious freedom. First settling in Alberta, they did not feel they were receiving what had been promised, so they later resettled in the West Kootenay.
