In 1909, Boyce, a Chicago publisher, encountered the Boy Scouts in London while visiting England. Impressed by the program and its impact on youth, he met with Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts, and received permission to establish a similar organization in the United States. Upon his return to America, Boyce founded the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) on February 8, 1910.

William Dickson Boyce, who founded the American Boy Scouts (BSA), was a Chicago newspaperman. In May 1910, New York newspaperman William Randolph Hearst established a competing youth organization called the American Boy Scouts (ABS). Unlike the BSA, the ABS included activities involving firearms, mock battles, and drills. The BSA, represented by former Supreme Court Justice Charles Evan Hughes, sued the ABS for using similar terms and for their militaristic approach. The court issued an injunction preventing the ABS from using the names "Boy Scouts," "scouting," or any related terms.
