T/F Setbacks are not normal in recovery.

Setbacks are a normal part of progress. They are not failures. They are caused by insufficient coping skills and/or inadequate planning, which are issues that can be fixed [8]. Clients are encouraged to challenge their thinking by looking at past successes and acknowledging the strengths they bring to recovery [8]. This stops clients from making global statements, such as, “This proves I’m a failure.” When individuals take an all-or-nothing, dichotomous view of recovery, they are more likely to feel overwhelmed and abandon long-term goals in favor of short-term relief. This reaction is termed the Abstinence Violation Effect [8].

What is Refuge Recovery?

Refuge Recovery is a practice, a process, a set of tools, a treatment, and a path to healing addiction and the suffering caused by addiction. The main inspiration and guiding philosophy for the Refuge Recovery program are the teachings of Siddhartha (Sid) Gautama( later Known as Buddha), a man who lived in India twenty-five hundred years ago. Sid was a radical psychologist and a spiritual revolutionary. Through his own efforts and practices he came to understand why human beings experience and cause so much suffering. He referred to the root cause of suffering as “uncontrollable thirst or repetitive craving.” This “thirst” tends to arise in relation to pleasure, but it may also arise as a craving for unpleasant experiences to go away, or as an addiction to people, places, things, or experiences. This is the same thirst of the alcoholic, the same craving as the addict, and the same attachment as the codependent.

The Refuge Recovery program has adapted the core teachings of the Buddha as a treatment of addiction.

What are major differences between SMART Recovery and 12 Step Program?

SMART: Is a relatively new, science-based, self-empowering recovery tool that advocates for choice in recovery. It can be a good alternative to Alcoholics Anonymous programs like the 12-Step program.

12 Step: Are group of spiritual ideals that can help you on your way to recovery when you practice them as a way of life.

Where the 12-Step program often holds that individuals don’t have willpower strong enough to overcome addiction by themselves (i.e. you’re powerless in the face of addiction) SMART recovery is different in that it teaches individuals how to use self-reliance as a long-term tool to use on the road to sobriety.
