Dr. John S. Pemberton was a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1885, he established Pemberton Chemical Company and created various medicines. The next year, he began to experiment with a new headache medicine. He melted sugar in boiling water in a kettle. He stirred in other ingredients, such as caffeine, more sugar, and several oils. It resulted in a sticky brown syrup. Two major ingredients were extracts from leaves of the coca plant and the kola nut. Combining "coca" and "kola," Pemberton's accountant suggested that he name the concoction "Coca-Cola."

On May 8, 1886, Pemberton and his partners took the syrup to Jacobs's Pharmacy in Atlanta. He asked the druggist to mix one ounce of syrup with five ounces of water and sell it at the soda fountain to treat headaches and fatigue. The men sampled it and liked the taste. THE crocodile has the most powerful bite ever measured for animals that are now living. For example, the saltwater crocodile, found near Australia, can bite nearly three times as hard as a lion or a tiger. Yet, the crocodile’s jaw is also incredibly sensitive to touch—even more sensitive than the human fingertip. How can that be, considering the crocodile’s armored skin?

The crocodile’s jaw is covered with thousands of sense organs. After studying them, researcher Duncan Leitch noted: “Each of the nerve endings comes out of a hole in the skull.” This arrangement protects the nerve fibers in the jaw while providing sensitivity that in some spots is greater than instruments could measure. As a result, the crocodile can distinguish between food and debris in its mouth. That is also how a mother crocodile can carry her hatchlings in her mouth without accidentally crushing them. The crocodile’s jaw is a surprising combination of power and sensitivity.

Sooner or later, nearly every student has a teacher who seems unfair, too demanding, or just plain mean.

  • Luis, 21, recalls: “I had a teacher who regularly used profanity and treated her students disrespectfully. She was going to retire soon, so she may have counted on not being fired.”

If you have a tough teacher, you don’t have to resign yourself to a school year of misery. Try the following suggestions.

  • Be adaptable. Teachers differ in what they want from their students. Try to figure out what your teacher expects from you, and do your best to comply.

  • Be respectful. Try to speak graciously to your teachers. Never talk back to them, even if you think they deserve it. Remember, they rightly see you as a student, not their peer.

  • Be understanding. Teachers are human too. That means they have pressures and anxieties, just like everyone else. So don’t simply conclude, ‘My teacher is mean’ or ‘My teacher hates me.’

  • Talk to your parents. Your parents are your best supporters. They want you to succeed at school, and their advice can help you deal with a difficult teacher.

  • Talk to your teacher. In a calm and nonconfrontational way, ask your teacher for help. Make it clear that you want to cooperate.

Name two things you can do to get along with your teacher
