Is the Tundra usually hot or cold?

Cold (very cold)

100

How many types of Tundra are there, and what are they all called?

There are 3: Alpine, Arctic, and Antarctic.

100

Name 3 animals that live in the Arctic tundra.

Polar bear, arctic fox, walrus, reindeer, arctic hare.

100

There are lots of trees in the tundra, true or false?

False! Almost nothing grows there.

100

Which type of tundra can you see the northern lights from?

Arctic Tundra.

200

Which is colder, the Arctic or Antarctic tundra?

Antarctic Tundra.

200

What type of Tundra is in Canada?

The Arctic Tundra.

200

Name 3 animals in the Alpine tundra.

Mountain goats, pika, marmot, bighorn sheep, snow leopard.

200

Grass grows in which type of tundra?

Alpine.

200

What does Tundra mean in Finnish?

Tunturia which is treeless hill.

300

What is the frozen ground of the tundra called? BONUS: What does this name mean?

Permafrost. BONUS: It means permanently frozen!

300

What parts of the world are the 3 types of tundra located, use the cardinal directions to explain.

Arctic = in the arctic, at the north pole

Antarctic = in the antarctic at the south pole

Alpine = on very high mountains all over the world

300

Name 3 animals in the Antarctic tundra.

Penguins, seals, walruses, and narwhals.

300

Name 3 types of plants that grow in the tundra.

Moss, lichen, small shrubs, dwarf willows, birches.

300

Give an example of the food chain in the tundra, use a producer, consumer, and decomposer.

Answers may vary. Sun -> moss -> caribou -> polar bear -> worms.
400
Explain what midnight sun is.

Midnight sun is what happens in the summer when the sun stays up all the time. It makes it look like the middle of the day at midnight.

400

Name 3 countries that the arctic tundra is found in.

Canada, Greenland, Russia, Iceland, Finland, Sweden.

400

What is it called when animals leave for a season, and why do they do it?

Migration. Animals leave during winter to go to other areas to find more food or warmth.

400

Why are plants in the tundra so small?

The smaller they are, the fewer resources they need to stay alive. Also it helps them keep warm if they are close to the ground and out of the way of the wind.

400

What are 3 important things humans would need to have in a village in the tundra?

Lots of lights for the cold, dark winters. Warm houses that protect against wind. Good ports to be able to ship food to the village.
500

How do you think climate change is impacting the tundra?

Climate change makes the tundra hotter, which melts the snow and ice. It is destroying the physical layout of the tundra and making it too warm for animals to live there.

500

Why is the alpine tundra found all over the world, rather than just in the poles? How is it possible that it can survive there?

The alpine tundra is found in really high mountains where it is very cold! As you go higher in altitude the air gets thinner and the temperature gets colder, so almost nothing can grow there.

500

What is one adaptation a tundra animal has, and why do they have that adaptation?

Answers may vary. The arctic fox changes its colour over the year. In the winter they are white to blend in with the snow and in the summer they are brown to blend in with the dirt.

500

What is one major adaptation that plants in the tundra have, and why do they have this adaptation?

Answers may vary. All tundra plants grow extremely quickly in the summer; this is an adaptation that helps them survive in the tundra, where there is almost no warmth.

500

What is one problem that the tundra is facing right now, and how could you solve it?

One issue is global warming it is melting and destroying the tundra. We can help by advocating for the environment and reducing our pollution/carbon footprint.
