Plus, they felt less responsible for their misfortune since the economic downturn was out of regular people’s control.

The Great Depression forced Pop and Cal to leave their farm and live on the road because of this they "Knights of the Road" and learned a lot about how other people live. It also forced them to separate from one another because Pop had to fight with the Bonus Army in Washington D.C

Cal describes how in the mess hall the "Stalustey" or the dark skinned kids sit in a completely different area than the rest of the kids. This is important because he realizes that many people at Challagi are judgemental of others based on their skin. He begins to wonder why people act this way and doesn't agree with it.
