WHMIS stands for...

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

100

Describe the difference between Solute, Solvent and Solution.

Solution: Dissolving one substance into another

Solute:Substance that gets dissolved

Solvent: Substance that does the dissolving.

100

The unit for density of a solid is...

g/cm3

100

Describe the purpose of a valve.

Device to control or regulate the amount of flow.

100

Anything that has no fixed shape and can flow.

Fluid

200

The shape/color of a hazard symbol tells you...

How Dangerous something is

200

describe the difference between Homogenous and Heterogenous.

Homogeneous: Looks as if it is all ONE substance

Heterogenous: Can see all the different substances that make it up

200

Explain the relationship between Viscosity and Temperature.

Increasing Temperature = Decreasing Viscosity.

Decreasing Temperature = Increasing Viscosity.

200

How does "the bends" occur in a diver?

The diver ascends too quickly from the bottom of the ocean.
200

What is the role of the surfactant in laundry detergent?

particles that attach themselves to dirt and oil particles, separating them from the fabric they were on.

300

Describe one way fluids are useful.

Transport, Process and Different materials.

300

What are the two factors that affect solubility?

1. A given amount of Solvent

2. A given temperature

300

Explain the relationship between Density and Temperature.

Higher Temperature = Less Dense

Lower Temperature = More Dense

300

Why are Surfactants important in laundry detergent?

particles that attach themselves to dirt and oil particles, separating them from the fabric they were on.

300

What is an aqueous solution?

A solution is aqueous if it contains water.

400

What is a pipeline pig?

A device sent through the inside of a pipeline to clean without stopping the flow of the fluid.

400

What are the four key points of the particle model of matter?

  1. ALL MATTER is made up of TINY PARTICLES. Different substances are made up of different particles
  2. The tiny particles of matter ARE ALWAYS MOVING & VIBRATING
  3. The particles in matter may be ATTRACTED TO EACH OTHER, or bonded together
  4. The particles have SPACES between them
400

Why are gases more compressible than liquids?

Particles of gases are further apart than the particles of liquids.

400

How does a submarine submerge and then ascend into the water?

1. Floating on Surface: Ballast tanks are full of air, density is less than water.

2. Diving: Ballast tanks release the compressed air, and fill with water. Making submarine more dense than the water.

3. Re-surfacing: Ballast tanks release water, intake air into tank and become less dense than the water, allowing it to resurface.

400

Cannot be separated into different substances.

Pure Substances
