I want to be oversubscribed into a 100-level, 200-level, or creative writing course.

The English Department does not allow oversubscriptions into these courses. There are no exceptions to this policy.

*If they are already a creative writing minor, they should email the minor advisor to adjust their timeline. Kayla may suggest taking their literature requirement that semester or she may be able to get a special exception from creative writing depending on the urgency of the matter.

I need to get into a Professional Writing class.

Administrative permissions and policies for Professional Writing Courses are overseen by the Professional Writing Office in 1220.

**If the student seems upset, offer to walk them over. If they have already tried to go there and they are closed, give them Grace's name and email (gjc@umd.edu). Her contact info is on the front desk reference guide.

A student asks you if 408b counts for the long 18th century requirement. What do you do?

Offer the student a boilerplate and a copy of their most recent requirement worksheet. They should be able to see if the course falls into the category in question. If they have additional questions, they can schedule an advising appointment.

*Listen for the requirement in question to determine which boilerplate to give the student. You could also determine this from their major worksheet.

I am in a 200-level creative writing workshop this semester. Can I get permission for the 300-level?

Your grade of an A- or higher for the 200-level workshop must be posted before our office can give you permission for the 300-level workshop. You can call, email english@umd.edu, or stop by the office when your official grade has posted.

*Bonus info: we will not accept elms grades or letters from instructors promising their grade will be an A- or higher.

Student must meet the prerequisite of two ENGL courses in literature or creative writing AND have completed a 200-level creative writing workshop. Cassie, Karen, or an advisor can help with the permission. Students can also email english@umd.edu.

Where can you find information about graduation?

The English Department website lists information for the departmental ceremony. Go to english.umd.edu and click on academics > undergraduate > Commencement Information. You'll find what you need under upcoming ceremonies. It lists the date/time/location, regalia, when graduates should arrive, directions/parking, special assistance, photography, etc.

*For information about the campus wide ceremony in Xfinity visit commencement.umd.edu.

Give the student a permission to walk form from the bookshelf.

True or False.

I need to schedule an appointment to have a syllabus reviewed for transfer credit.

False.

If the course is an English course, then the syllabus can be sent to english@umd.edu for review. Karen will evaluate the course, write to the student, and write to transfer credit. Our office cannot evaluate courses for AWP, PWP, or other departments.

500

Room number 1117.

The only room in Tawes with "111" is 1116 Tawes (Academic Writing Office). If students are looking for 1117 ask them to check the building location. Tydings Hall (TYD) often has room numbers that start with 111.

Testudo is only letting me register for the holdfile. How can I get permission to enroll in the course?

Explain seat management to the student.

There are certain GenEd courses that are under the Registrar Office's seat management plan. We are unable to override this policy. Students with over 60 credits are able to holdfile the course. On the first day of class, the holdfile becomes the waitlist and students from the holdfile take any available seat in the course. We have seen students move off of holdfiles and into courses but you should reach out to your academic advisor to select a back-up course in case you are not able to get into the course. The policy can be found on the Registrar's website.

*some students are not able to holdfile because they are not putting in the section number. Troubleshoot this with them.

500

I am first on a waitlist for a course can I just get bumped into the class?

Find out what the course is to see if it is a class that can be oversubscribed. If it is, give them an oversubscription form and tell them they need to get the instructors signature and return the form to our office before the end of the add/drop period.

The English Dept does not oversubscribe 100-level courses, 200-level courses, or creative writing workshops (ENGL352,353,498,499). Oversubscriptions for ENGL101 and Professional Writing (ENGL390-398) are handled by their respective offices.

*These notes are on a sticky note on the oversubscription forms on the student desk & on the front desk cheat sheet.
