A coping skill is anything we practice to help manage our negative/strong negative emotions. It doesn't make the feeling go away but helps make it feel more manageable so we can feel more in control.

Does self care have to be fancy things like buying things for ourselves or spa days?

No! Self care can be resting when we are sick, brushing our teeth, or letting others know when we need space.

It is okay to get really angry. The concern is what we do with that anger and be careful not to make choices/actions when very angry that we might regret.

What is a long term goal versus a short term goal?

A long term goal would be a goal for far into the future like a goal that is years away. A short term goal is something that is a goal for sometime much sooner like a month away.

Healthy coping skills help manage our emotions in a way that is not harmful to myself or others.

Unhealthy coping skills manage emotions in ways that can be harmful to myself or others or make the emotion stronger/worse, and often lead to negative consequences.

Reminder of the DMV example where I threw a fit because of having to wait in line/not getting what I wanted. Unexpected and uncomfortable.

How can I practice self care when I have a lot to do and feel overwhelmed?

Take small breaks to go walk for a few minutes, stretch, or maybe a small snack break. Taking too long of a break can make it more overwhelming but small breaks can help you feel more recharged.

Taking a walk, counting to 20+, deep breaths, mindful practices, meditation, punching bag, TIPS.

Why do we create smaller goals to build up to one big goal later on? Why not just go straight for the big goal?

It is helpful to build up steps so that we don't get overwhelmed too quickly. Taking on too big of a goal too quickly can be very discouraging because it will be so hard to start with and see progress.

Probably not, self care must form a habit and the more regularly we practice self care habits the more it will benefit our health.

Recognizing our emotions can help us process and understand them. If we do not recognize our own emotions they may continue to build and later explode.
