What is biotechnology?

The use of biological processes for industrial and other purposes

100

What is the purpose of micropipettes in the lab?

Transferring very small volumes of liquid with high accuracy.

100
What is the formula for error analysis?

|Accepted-Measured|/Accepted *100

200

You spent 13 hours studying for your biotechnology test. How many minutes did you spend studying?

780 minutes

200

What molecules are present in a cell that might interfere with DNA extraction?

DNAses. If they are not properly deactivated by the proteases added during the process they would denature the DNA making the extraction process either impossible or only provide small fragments of DNA.

200

What is the difference between complimentary and alternative medicine?

Alternative- instead of
Complimentary- in addition to

200

You are using a 2-20ul micropipette. The numbers on the pipette read
1
2
4
What is the measurement in the micropipette

12.4

What is the measurement?

155 ul

300

You have 30grams of an unknown ezyme with a molar mass of (153g/mol) what will the concentration be when you add your enzyme to 500 ml of water? (Round to .01)

.39 M

300

What are the 4 nitrogen bases in DNA

Adenine  Cytosine  Guanine  Thymine

300

What are the 4 areas of biotechnology?

Industrial Biotechnology
Medical Biotechnology
Agricultural Biotechnology

You need to measure out 7 ml of a solution. What pipette do you use and what color pump will you need?

Use a 10 ml pipette or a 5ml more than once. You will need a green pump.

300

What is semiconservative replication as it relates to DNA

The process in which the DNA molecule uncoils and separates into two strands. Each original strand becomes a template on which a new strand is constructed, resulting in two DNA molecules identical to the original DNA molecule.

You have a 60% stock solution. You need to prepare 400 mL of a 45% solution, then 300 mL of a 20% solution from the 45% solution, and finally 100 mL of a 5% solution from the 20% solution. How many ml of each solution will you need? How muchwater?

You need 300 mL of the 60% stock solution and 100 mL of water.
You need 133.33 mL of the 45% solution and 166.67 ml of water
You need 25 mL of the 20% solution and 75 mL of water.

400
Which 2 enzymes are involved in DNA replication

DNA polymerase, Helicase

400

What are three jobs you can have under "biotechnology" professions?

Many answers; research and development in medicine, agriculture. Forensic work, pharmaceutical work. Biotechnician.

400

In the pipette lab, we used a spectrophotometer. What was the role of the spectrophotometer in the lab and what did it measure?

The spectrophotometer measured absorbance of light. The color changes the wavelength which the spectrophotometer would read. We were able to compare "actual" (teacher) to student data to determine accuracy of results.

400

What are 2 different applications of extracting (and replicating) DNA?

1. Forensics
2. For GMOs
3. Genetic testing (disease), Paternity testing, Ethnicity testing
4. Environmental toxin/bacteria testing

A biotech company is synthesizing a new drug. The production process requires 8.50 micrograms of a key enzyme per milliliter of reaction solution. The company needs to produce 250 liters of the solution for a large batch. The enzyme is supplied in vials, each containing 5.00 milligrams of the enzyme. How many vials of the enzyme are required for the entire batch?

425 vials

500

List all the steps involved in DNA extraction (4/5 steps)

Chew the inside of your mouth and rinse vigorously with water

Add salt
Mix in lysis solution

Add protease, incubate at 50C

What is the relationship between CAM and equity?

Complimentary and Alternative medicine are typically medicines that were developed by indigenous (or non western) peoples. Extraction of resources for western medicine takes away peoples right to their medicines they have had access to for centuries. Due to inequity of access of our healthcare system, sometimes CAM provides alternatives to people.

500

You come into lab and you need to extract DNA. What materials and equipment will you need?

You will need
Lysis
Salt
Protease
Water bath
Vial
Disposable pipettes

500

How is CAM related to biotechnology?

Most medicine is based on biological products (plants). Biotechnology can support the extraction of the specific molecules that have desired effects to be amplified (via DNA extraction and replication) while reducing potential other effects. It is important to consider ethics, equity and access in our work as biotechnicians.
