(Honors chem: 0.645 g/mL)

400

What phase change is shown below? (This is dry ice.)

Sublimation

400

Explain the difference between a homogeneous mixture and a heterogeneous mixture.

A homogeneous mixture is the same composition throughout while a heterogeneous mixture has definite pieces/separates into layers.  It is not the same throughout.

You find a shiny gold rock and need to determine if it's real gold.  (Lucky you!)  The rock is 123 g.  You put the rock in a graduated cylinder with 5.00 mL of water.  The water level rises to 11.37 mL.  If the density of real gold is 19.32 g/mL, is your shiny gold rock the real deal?

*You must prove your answer with a calculation!

Yes!

500

Possible answers:

Frost on the grass/roofs

Snowflakes

(3) mixture of elements

(4) mixture of compounds

(5) mixture of elements and compounds

(5) Mixture of elements and compounds

500

Why is the second flat area longer than the first flat area on the heating curve shown?

The second flat area represents vaporization.  It takes more energy to break the forces of attraction between molecules to move them into the gas phase.  The first flat area is shorter because fewer forces of attraction are being broken to move the substance into the liquid phase.
