When a 14 year old girl was caught smoking in the school bathroom, she was questioned by the principal and her purse was searched.  Inside the purse was a pack of cigarettes, rolling papers, and a small amount of marijuana.  Terry claimed that the search of her purse was a violation of her rights.  The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the schools, stating that schools have the right to search a student’s personal property if they have a reasonable suspicion.

How are checks and balances taking place in this example:

After WWI, US President Woodrow Wilson, along with French and British political leaders, believed in the necessity of creating a League of Nations to help prevent future wars.  In the United States, however, both the public and many legislators objected to US participating in the League.  Wilson campaigned to build public support for the League, but in the end the Senate defeated him and the treaty was nat ratified, and the US never joined the League of Nations.
