The author exposes the reader to the important elements that set up the background of the story (characters, setting, mood)
What is the Exposition?
Two main ways that an author shows us what a character's traits are.
Direct and Indirect Characterization
A word used to describe an action:
a verb
A word used to describe or modify a noun:
an adjective
"Teacher" is what part of speech?

The primary problem that drives the story.
This is a problem the main character is usually trying to solve or an obstacle they need to overcome.
What is the conflict?
This is the easy way to remember how an author uses Direct Characterization
What is S. T. E. A. L.?
These words show position in space or time.
Example: under, over, at, after
What are prepositions?
"Run" is what part of speech in this sentence?
I went on a long run.

"Purple" is what part of speech?
adjective
The point where there is a marked turning point for the story or the goals of the main character.
What is the Climax?
This type of character changes significantly throughout the course of the story.
What is a Dynamic character?
This type of clause is not considered a complete sentence.
What is a dependent clause?
With this point of view, the narrator is acually in the story.
What is First Person Point of View?

What is the Rising Action?
This type of character does not go through significant change.
What is 3rd person point of view?
This type of clause can stand on its own.
What is an independent clause?
The readers feelings that are evoked through the words or descriptions in the text.
What is Mood?
The final solution to the central conflict and ultimately where the story comes to a conclusion. This is where the protagonist gets a final result- whether positive or negative
What is the resolution?
One of these types of character is very complex and has a lot of good and bad traits-
The other kind of character is unrealistic and we don't know much about them.
What are Round and Flat characters?
