"Columbus thought that he could chart a faster trading route to Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. Until then, the only known ways to get to Asia were by land (which was a long trip) or by sailing all the way around Africa (also long). The idea was to bring spices, silk, and other valuable goods back to Europe and make a huge profit. There was also a chance that along the way they’d discover new lands where there might be gold and other natural resources. Columbus also figured he could convert the foreigners to Christianity. That suited the Christian kings of Europe, who wanted to see Christianity spread to the far reaches of the world. Still, Columbus spent years trying to convince wealthy investors to fund the voyage. Finally, Columbus was able to persuade King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, the rulers of Spain. As part of their agreement, Columbus would be granted the title of governor over any new lands he discovered, and a 10 percent share of all the riches he gathered!"

"“When we stepped ashore we saw fine green trees, streams everywhere and different kinds of fruit. I called to the two captains to jump ashore with the rest, ...asking them to bear solemn witness that in the presence of all I was taking possession of this island for their Lord and Lady the King and Queen... Soon many of the islanders gathered around us. I could see that they were people who would be more easily converted to our Holy Faith by love than by coercion (force), and wishing them to look on us with friendship I gave some of them red bonnets and glass beads which they hung round their necks, and many other things of small value, at which they were so delighted and so eager to please us that we could not believe it. Later they swam out to the boats to bring us parrots and balls of cotton thread and darts, and many other things, exchanging them for such objects as glass beads and hawk bells. They took anything, and gave willingly whatever they had." "
