Hearing disabilities, poor acoustics, noisy surroundings. It is also difficult to listen if you are ill, tired, or uncomfortable.

The process of recognizing the message being sent. The receiver must use his or her skills (verbal and nonverbal) to try to determine the message being sent.

If other ideas run counter to our preconceived thoughts, we tend to tune out speakers and thus fail to receive messages.
